Controls Hardware Engineer

Full-Time · Brighton

In this position you will be responsible for controls development including electrical and fluid designs, bills of materials, component sizing and selection, panel layouts, technical support, training, and standards review. Many projects will be designed from the ground up while others may be based upon previous builds. Being at ease interacting with the customer and clearly communicating technical details is vital.


Major Duties:

Report to the Electrical Engineering Manager for project assignments and report on daily activity progress and responsibilities.

Responsible for hardware designs including electrical, pneumatic, and other fluid systems for automation systems.

Aid the sales and applications departments in evaluating future projects and customer request(s) for quotes. Typically providing controls architecture, cost, and labor estimates.

Work with various teams including controls and mechanical engineering, build team, etc. to validate designs meet expectations and functional requirements.

Coordinate with the Engineering Department on a timely basis to ensure that all drawings, calculations, controls hardware architecture, bill of materials, manuals, sequence of operation, etc. are kept current and correct.

Provide improvement suggestions regarding departmental standards, processes, and other feedback to the management team.

Attend project kick off meetings including internal and external kick offs, lessons learned meetings, project status meetings, etc.

Develop and review electrical and fluid drawings, schematics, manuals, controls architecture, and other pertinent information to determine the best solution and proper tools for system set up or problem resolution.

Perform field checks to validate drawing packages received for either retool or replacement type projects with or without existing documentation.

Support the peripheral device setup (hardware configurations) for various systems.

Support set up and configure communication networks including but not limited to device net, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, IO Link, and remote I/O.

Prepare service/warranty and other reports for customers and internal distribution in a timely manner.

Required Skills:

B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience.

3-5 years’ experience in controls systems engineering preferred.

Strong experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical a must. Preference will be given to those with experience in EPlan P8 or higher.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite a must.

Preference will be given to those with PLC Programming experience with either Rockwell, and/or Siemens platforms. Consideration will be given to those with Modicon/ Telemecanique, Mitsubishi, Fanuc, Omron, or other not listed.

Preference will be given to those with Robot Programming experience including but not limited to ABB, Kuka, Fanuc, Yaskawa/Motoman, Nachi, etc.

Controls Project Engineer

Full-Time · Brighton

In this position you will be responsible for overseeing projects with a team of controls engineers working under your supervision. You will be part of a project execution team consisting of a Mechanical Project Engineer and a Project Manager who are responsible for all aspects of a project overseeing timing, budgets, workflow, and delegation of tasks to the engineering team.


Major Duties: 

Leadership and Team Management 

Lead and Manage Team Oversee, mentor, and work with the controls engineering team, internal and external to develop design solutions that meet customer specifications, nation and regional standards, safety requirements, and GRG standards. 

Provide direction and guidance to ensure productivity, efficiency, and adherence to project deadlines and quality standards. 

Resource Allocation and Scheduling Manage resource planning, task prioritization, and scheduling to ensure engineering activities align with overall project timelines. Ensure optimal staffing and skill sets within the team. 

Provide Feedback on Performance and Professional Development Report back to Management the overall performance of the engineers as a team and individually, and potential areas for growth and skill development to support employees’ professional development. Design and Development of Electrical and Control Systems 

Controls Systems Design Oversee the development of control systems including but not limited to controls architectures, system layouts, network and power distribution layouts, electrical and fluid system designs, and software designs for PLC and robot systems. 

Electrical System Design Lead the design of electrical control systems for custom-built machine tools, including high and low-voltage circuits, power distribution, machine layouts, motor control systems, and other electrical components.

Control Panel Design Oversee the development of control panel layouts, ensuring adherence to industry standards, safety codes, and best practices. Guide the design of enclosures, wiring schemes, and component selection. 

Motion Control Systems Design and integrate advanced motion control systems, including servo motors, drives, and encoders, to optimize the performance of machine tools. Oversee tuning and optimization for precise and reliable motion control. 

Power Distribution and Electrical Infrastructure Design and implement power distribution systems, including transformers, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and circuit protection, ensuring that systems are reliable, efficient, and scalable. 

PLC and HMI Programming Lead the design and programming of PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems to control machine operations. Ensure customer programming standards are maintained, and systems operate efficiently.Robot Simulations and Programming Lead the simulation and programming of robots (e.g. ABB, Fanuc, Kuka, Yaskawa, etc.) systems to control machine operations. Ensure customer programming standards are maintained, and systems operate efficiently. Work with Mechanical Engineering to ensure issues during simulations are communicated and resolved and all pertinent information is cross communicated. Project Management 

Project Oversight Take ownership of controls engineering aspects of machine tool build and rebuild projects, managing the scope, schedule, and resources. Coordinate with the Project Execution Team to ensure timely delivery and adherence to budget and quality standards. 

Cost Management Maintain budgets for electrical and controls engineering work, including alternate sourcing of components, labor costs, and system testing. Manage the costs of control systems and components, working to minimize waste and optimize resource use. Report potential risks to the Controls Engineering Manager and Project Execution Team. 

Client and Vendor Interaction Interface with customers to define electrical and controls requirements and specifications. Work with suppliers/vendors to ensure material requirements are forecasted to reduce risk of long lead items impacting overall project timing. 

Documentation and Compliance Oversee the creation and maintenance of detailed engineering documentation, including electrical and fluid schematics, software programs and any maintenance or operations manuals. Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., UL, CE) and regulatory or regional codes.

System Integration, Testing, and Troubleshooting 

Integration of Electrical and Mechanical Systems Collaborate with the mechanical and software teams to ensure seamless integration of control systems with mechanical components and software platforms. Addressing potential integration challenges early in the design process. 

Testing and Validation Lead the testing and validation process of all equipment, including the use of simulation tools to verify design functionality. Manage functional testing, factory acceptance tests, and system integration testing to ensure systems meet design specifications and quality standards. Aid in the develop of process check sheets, validation methods and best practices to ensure efficiency and consistency across projects. 

Troubleshooting and Support Oversee troubleshooting efforts during machine builds, installations, and commissioning. Provide in-depth support for diagnosing and resolving electrical, control, and automation issues during the prototype and production phases.

Safety and Compliance 

Safety Standards Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards in the design and implementation of electrical systems. Ensure that all electrical installations are safe, comply with OSHA regulations, and follow industry safety best practices.

Code Compliance Ensure electrical and control systems comply with relevant national and international codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEC, UL, CE, ISO, CSA). Take responsibility for electrical safety and risk assessments throughout the project lifecycle. 

Risk Mitigation Identify potential risks and implement measures to mitigate these risks, from design through to implementation and ongoing operation. Qualifications and Requirements Education • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, automation, or a related field a requirement. A master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., PE) is a plus.

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical/controls engineering, with a focus on the design and integration of electrical and control systems in machine tool design and manufacturing. 

Ideal candidate should possess experience with either controls hardware system designs, or PLC programming (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, etc.), motion control, VFDs, servo motors, and HMI systems.

Firsthand experience with machine tools, automation systems, industrial control systems and retooling projects is highly preferred.

Skills and Competencies 

Strong leadership and team-building abilities, with a history of successfully working with cross-functional teams. 

Excellent technical critical thinking skills, with the ability to address complex electrical and control challenges.

Deep understanding of control system architectures, programming, and troubleshooting in industrial environments. 

Knowledge of electrical design tools and software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, etc.).

Mechanical Project Engineer

Full-Time · Brighton

In this position you will be responsible for directing a mechanical engineering team to analyze customer requirements, develop competitive systems, station concepts and designs. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams (Controls PE, Project Management, Project Execution), managing project timelines and budgets.


Major Responsibilities: 

Manage technical projects from start to finish, including developing plans, setting deadlines, tracking dependencies, removing blockers, and communicating progress to the Management Team. 

Establish work plans and delegate assignments to team members to meet objectives. 

Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality, and allotted budget. 

Ensure all designs meet the relevant safety objectives and that legal requirements are observed for all work completed. 

Conduct internal design reviews prior to release to the customer for approval or for manufacturing to ensure design is functional and complete prior to its release. 

Approve and finalize designs to meet project requirements. 

Coordinate with internal teams, suppliers, and external partners to ensure seamless project execution. 

Oversee the mechanical engineers to develop cost effective design solutions based on engineering principles and best practices. 

Serve as an effective mentor and motivator for your team. 

Provide technical support to external and internal customers. 

Travel to customer facilities during installation phase may be required. 

Aid in resolving any operational issues related to projects and minimize delays or unexpected cost increases to projects. 

Interpret customer requirements, identify, and address design parameters and engineering problems to ensure solutions are implemented accurately and within budget.

Track project performance so needed changes can be made quickly, and persistent challenges can be brought to the attention of the applications team. 

Maintain accurate project documentation and reporting for the management team.

Work with Controls Project Engineer and Project Execution to ensure timely and thorough hand off designed solutions. 

Work with external suppliers for engineering services such as design/detailing support, external components such as conveyors, feeders, spindles, dispensers, etc. 

Manage customer documentation such as user manuals, maintenance manuals, recommended spare parts lists as part of final documents package. 

Other duties as necessary to ensure organizational success and customer satisfaction. 

Conduct cost and time estimations for cost to go project related meetings.

Proposal Engineer

The Proposal Engineer is responsible for developing and documenting solutions that meet the specific needs of our customers. These solutions may involve machinery, production lines, or the retooling of existing equipment. The Proposal Engineer must be able to interpret conceptual layouts, accurately price the solution, and craft a proposal that is clear and understandable to both the customer and GRG’s engineering teams.


Key Responsibilities:

The Proposal Engineer would be responsible for the following.

Customer Engagement:

  • Lead SOR (Statement of Requirements) / RFQ (Request for Quote) review meetings with customers, either on-site or in-house, to determine the next steps.

  • Communicate with customers to understand specific requirements and ensure all necessary follow-up actions are taken both with the customer and within internal departments.

  • Coordinate the procurement of vendor quotations for critical equipment, including:

  • Developing technical specifications.

  • Identifying and engaging qualified vendors.

  • Collaborating with the purchasing department to finalize vendor details.

  • Communicating with vendors to provide line-ups, explore alternative solutions, and clarify quotations.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Application Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Application Engineer to lead the development of technical concepts and cost estimations across various automotive technologies, including Powertrain, Body-in-White, and General Assembly systems. This role involves direct engagement with customers, leading technical reviews, and coordinating with internal teams to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions.


Key Responsibilities:

The Applications Engineer would be responsible for the following.

Customer Engagement

  • Lead Statement of Requirements (SOR) and Request for Quotation (RFQ) review meetings, both on-site and in-house.

  • Communicate specific customer requirements and provide necessary follow-up support to internal departments.

Technical Application Development:

  • Thoroughly review and comprehend customer requirements and specifications, including:

Production Division Position Summary: 

Work with Mechanical Engineers to develop detailed drawings for manufacturing including but not limited to assembly level drawings, dimensional drawings for manufacturing utilizing GD&T, layout drawings, etc. 


Supervision: Reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager 


Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of detail designs. 

  • Responsible to review form and fit of design details and report errors to the respective engineer.

Position Summary: Responsible for leading high quality industrial and automation electrical work, leading additional electrical builders and contractors, and effective machine electrical build supervision and start-up.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Electrical Build Lead for project assignments and to report on daily activity progress and responsibilities.

  • Proactively assessing work to be completed based on input from Project Manager, Engineering, and assigning/completing work within project constraints.

Position Summary:

Responsible for producing high quality industrial and automation assembly work with a major focus in developing, leading, executing, and communicating technical aspects of the projects assigned. Primary responsibility in coordination of technical activities and data between Build, Project Management, Engineering, Purchasing, and Shipping/Receiving to ensure successful and efficient building and launching of GRG Projects. Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Project Planning

  • Align goals with Project Manager on assigned projects to develop and lead engineering, build, commissioning, and installation strategies and milestones.

  • Work with assigned project engineers and project manager to create and track overall project timeline in alignment with as sold quotation.

  • Set, communicate and track project budgets to as-sold costs internally. Publish and update as required by GRG management and Customers alike.

  • Understand project technical scope in detail and limitations to where scope ends. Notify customers of out of scope requests and drive MECR’s accordingly.


Project Build

  • Review and communicate work to be executed and determine machining and build location based on project constraints.

  • Ensures project build teams have all correct and current documentation (models, drawings, forums, etc) for building latest designs.

  • Set and communicate regular updates to team working on project, shifts in milestones, MECR’s, prioritization etc.

  • Set and lead project whiteboard meetings with project manager. Track open issues to closure within project team.

  • Final review of build quality – review quality of project assembly builds that they are both to GRG standard and meet all customer specifications.


Commissioning and Debug

  • Works with build and engineering teams after power on to setup and test each station and assembly in accordance with its as sold intent.

  • Leads cycle time and throughput verification and ensures we are meeting as sold specification.

  • Leads open issue tracking and closure of points – Identifying issue, quotation, purchasing, integration, and closure.

  • Communicates and works with PM on cost projections for all project tasks and rework as needed.

  • Tracks delivery of materials needed by build and engineering teams – sets and communicates due dates based on dates from purchasing.

  • Capture missing, incorrect, bad components and details from build teams, work with purchasing and suppliers to get these components within project timing.


Internal & External Runoff

  • Defines and understands in detail the project runoff criteria and both communicates and sets these expectations for internal runoff criteria.
